If you are serious about changing your weight/health/fitness level/lifestyle; logging your fuel is imperative. Specially in the beginning.
You are right. It is a habit that will have to be formed and may take a while to get used to but it doesn't HAVE to be a manual log. ...with all of the technology out there, it can be on your phone or on a web site. On a blog or even Facebook!!
It will, WITHOUT fail, hold you accountable for all that you take in. H2o AND fuel.
Now, at the start you may not like what you are logging. And that's alright. In time you will be more and more aware of what you are putting into your mouth and why.
It's that fact that will help you create new habits on how you fuel and hydrate.
In my 20yrs of experience in losing weight, no diet is really necessary. Just work at sticking to mostly natural foods and limit your portions and frequency of the processed ones. ;)
(And get active... Of course.)
